We wrote these notes when we read the Codewars site for our SQL comparisons. For each note, you see the day of our check and a link to the page that we read.
Codewars price and plans
- Codewars charges "$5 billed monthly", "$24 billed every 6 months" or "$40 billed annually" for Codewars Red. Checked October 24, 2026 (source)
Codewars free use
- You can train on SQL kata free. We found no kata for which you need Codewars Red, the paid plan. Checked October 15, 2026 (source)
Codewars account
- You can open a kata and make a full attempt with no account. In a private browser window, we wrote a correct query for "SQL Basics: Simple GROUP BY", and Codewars ran it and showed "Outstanding! You may take your time to refactor/comment your solution." Checked October 21, 2026 (source)
Codewars query check and help
- In its tests, Codewars compares your result rows with the expected rows. If your rows are different, Codewars shows the expected rows and your rows. We ran a two-query test with no account, on the kata "SQL Basics: Simple GROUP BY". Codewars passed a rewrite with a subquery and the same rows, and failed a result one row short. Codewars also failed the same rows in a different order, although there is no order in the kata instructions. Checked October 17, 2026 (source)
Codewars SQL topics
- You can find approved SQL kata on joins ("SQL Basics: Simple JOIN", 7 kyu) and GROUP BY ("SQL Basics: Simple GROUP BY", 7 kyu). There are also approved kata on subqueries ("Subqueries master", 6 kyu) and window functions ("Using Window Functions To Get Top N per Group", 5 kyu). We found no kata with CTE in its title. Codewars SQL engines
- Codewars says that you can do SQL kata in SQLite3, PostgreSQL 9.6, or PostgreSQL 13.0. On all 8 SQL kata that we opened, PostgreSQL 13.0 was the default. You could choose SQLite on only 2 of the 8. Checked October 17, 2026 (source)
Codewars content and size
- Codewars lists 395 SQL kata: 385 approved kata and 10 beta kata. On its kata search for the SQL language, Codewars shows approved and beta kata together, and we read "395 Kata Found" there. With the filter for approved kata only, we read "385 Kata Found". Checked October 20, 2026 (source)
- You can go back to solved kata. Codewars says that with the "Practice and Repeat" routine, you get only kata that you trained on before. On the kata search page, you can also select "Kata I have completed". Checked October 17, 2026 (source)
Codewars updates
- On each kata page, Codewars shows a "Created" date and a "Published" date. Of the 395 SQL kata, the newest is "Most Common Words in Team Retrospectives" (6 kyu), with the published date January 4, 2026 on its page. Codewars gives search engines no change date in the kata pages, and does not list kata in its list of pages for search engines. Checked October 17, 2026 (source)
