Our notes on Exercism
We wrote these notes when we read the Exercism site for our SQL comparisons. For each note, you see the day of our check and a link to the page that we read.
Exercism price and plans
- Free. Exercism says that it is "100% free, forever". Checked October 17, 2026 (source)
Exercism free use
- All 81 exercises on the SQLite track are free. Checked October 17, 2026 (source)
Exercism account
- You must sign up to join the SQLite track. Checked October 17, 2026 (source)
Exercism query check and help
- In each exercise, you write SQL to fill a table, and in its test, Exercism compares each row of that table with the expected row. Exercism says that the "Run Tests" button "will check if your solution passes the exercise's tests". We could not run a two-query test, because you must sign in to open the editor. Checked October 24, 2026 (source)
Exercism SQL engines
- You write SQLite. Exercism says that its tests use sqlite3 version 3.53.4. Checked October 17, 2026 (source)
Exercism content and size
Exercism updates
- In the list of pages that Exercism gives search engines, Exercism gives the date September 9, 2026 to all 81 exercise pages of the SQLite track. This is not the day that we read that list, and Exercism gives that day to no page in the list. We found no date on an exercise page, and Exercism gives search engines no change date in the page. In the public GitHub project of the track, the newest change to the exercises is a sync of new test cases on August 29, 2026. Checked October 18, 2026 (source)
Exercism strengths and limits
- You get 81 SQLite exercises with automatic tests. Exercism says that when you have solved an exercise, you can "submit it to our volunteer team, and they'll give you hints, ideas, and feedback". Checked November 1, 2026 (source)
- You need an account to start, you practice only in SQLite, and many exercises are general code puzzles, such as "Collatz Conjecture", not data analysis questions. Checked October 17, 2026 (source)
